The majority of the breeds in this group share an ancestry from the Nordic dogs. Other breeds of this group were developed from ancient sheep dogs of the East and Tibet. Certain characteristics denote specific origins. Among these are: the tendency to produce natural bobtails (Eastern and Western Europe), and specific differences in coats (the tendency to have a long coat which will cord is from the Far East). Common characteristics include the ability to herd instinctively, quickness and agility, and a responsiveness to commands while retaining their independence. Dogs in this family include:
